U.S. Weather Service says Maine had first tornado of year

Kossuth Township – The first tornado of the year in Maine was confirmed by the National Weather Service in Caribou today. The tornado, an EF1, touched down in Kossuth Township, a sparsely populated region in Washington County on Monday, August 12th at around 6:40 pm.

The confirmation is the result of a damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service. The tornado touched town for approximately a quarter mile, taking down about 120 trees.

The tornado had estimated wind speeds of 90 mph and cut a swath about 200 yards wide when it touched down. No structures were damaged.
