Path to impeach? Dems forming new commission to go after Trump on coronavirus

WASHINGTON D.C. – If you thought the efforts to impeach President Donald Trump ended with the failed impeachment Trump labeled a “witch hunt” you may have been wrong. A new committee is being formed by Congressional Democrats in Washington D.C. and this time the focus will be on investigating the Trump Administration and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Multiple media outlets focused on Capitol Hill are reporting that Rep. Adam Schiff and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are preparing to form a “9/11 style commission” to investigate the Trump administration when the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. The commission, according to reports, would be granted subpoena power similar to the House committee Democrats used to haul witness after witness into televised hearings through the end of 2019 and into early 2020.

Rep. Schiff, of course, ran the Ukraine inquisition and appears set to be handed influence over the new commission as well.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced Rep. James Clyburn will chair a select committee looking into the Trump administration’s response to the pandemic. According to Byron York at the Washington Examiner, Pelosi will give the committee wide latitude to go after Trump, writing, “The committee will be empowered to examine all aspects of the federal response to the coronavirus.”

Clyburn recently made headlines for suggesting to fellow House Democrats that they should view the so-called “Phase 3” coronavirus legislation as “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”

Not long after, Democrats stalled agreement on that legislation with demands such as changes to election systems, restrictions on carbon emissions by airlines and other environmental restrictions including Green New Deal objectives, control over diversity on the boards of private corporations and more.

Now, it appears, Clyburn, Schiff and Speaker Pelosi are gearing up for yet another inquisition into the President, even as President Trump continues to lead the charge against the coronavirus pandemic.

Republicans are not shy about pushing back, with officials and surrogates blasting the Democrat push and pointing to the fact that Democrats were busy pursuing their last failed impeachment while President Trump was convening a task force to deal with the coronavirus.

The Republican National Committee framed the new effort by Democrats as a second round of the “witch hunt” against the President.

“Adam Schiff has started to formalize the second round of his witch hunt against President Trump. Schiff’s 9/11 commission-style coronavirus investigation is the epitome of the Democrats’ politicization of coronavirus,” tweeted the RNC.

Making matters worse for Democrats is their own statements and actions on the coronavirus pandemic.

Joe Biden, who is expected to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for President suggested President Trump’s ban on travel from China was rooted in xenophobia soon after Trump announced it. This past weekend, Biden tried to flip his position, suggesting instead that Trump had not instituted the ban early enough.

Several weeks after President Trump put the China travel ban into effect, sounding an alarm on the dangers of COVID-19, Speaker Pelosi visited San Francisco’s Chinatown, encouraging public gatherings.

It’s unclear how Democrats plan to square these actions with an inquisition into President Trump’s actions, given that he was acting while they were speaking out in defiance of his actions.

Still, it appears, the Democrats will work to investigate and put President Trump in a tough spot for whatever flaws they can find in his administration’s response.
