AUGUSTA – Media reports indicate that two of America’s wealthiest liberal political forces are lining up to boost Jared Golden of Lewiston as he tries to defeat Congressman Bruce Poliquin in Maine’s Second Congressional District.
Late last week, the Boston Globe reported that former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, famous for his anti-gun views, including an anti-gun referendum in Maine in 2016, is preparing to spend as much as $80 million on just a couple dozen Democrats running for Congress. Before turning his attention to restricting gun rights, Bloomberg was best known for his ‘big gulp’ soda ban in New York City.
While $80 million might be a shocking sum for most Mainers to fathom, it is a drop in the bucket when compared to Michael Bloomberg’s net worth, estimated at over $50 billion by Forbes.
In 2016 alone, Bloomberg spent nearly $6 million in Maine trying to create a law that would have restricted the Second Amendment rights of Mainers, only to see the referendum defeated in the November election by a grassroots coalition of Maine gun owners, sportsmen, and Second Amendment activists.
For her part, Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) is boosting the National Republican Congressional Committee’s claim that Golden is the “Nancy Pelosi of Maine” by having her PAC reserve thousands of television ad spots to boost Golden and attack Poliquin earlier than ever before, according to the Portland Press Herald.
In 2016, Pelosi’s PAC spent more than $1 million pushing Emily Cain’s challenge to Poliquin, filling the airwaves with attack ads on the incumbent Congressman.
