House To Vote Today On Tax Reform

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote today on a tax reform bill Republicans promise will cut taxes and simplify the tax code for the American people.

The bill has been marked up and Republican leaders seem confident they have the votes.

Paul Ryan, Speaker of the US House of Representatives

On Fox News this morning, Speaker Paul Ryan declined to predict the actual results of the roll call vote, but sounded a confident note on the ability of the House to pass the bill.

Maine’s Second Congressional District Rep. Bruce Poliquin has signaled his intention to vote in favor of the bill, Rep. Chellie Pingree, who represents Maine’s First District, has attacked the tax cuts on social media and in a recent event, is expected to vote no.

President Trump will make a visit to Capitol Hill to discuss tax reform today as well.

The tax reform effort still has other hurdles to clear, as the U.S. Senate is also working on a tax reform bill with some differences from the House bill, most notably a larger child tax credit and repeal of the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act, which has penalized tens of thousands of Maine families.
