State By State Data: Middle-Class Families Are Paying Obamacare Penalty In Huge Numbers Across United States

State level data shows that despite promises from politicians, the tax for not purchasing health insurance is hitting middle-class Americans hard.

President Barack Obama

The United States Senate is currently considering a repeal of the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) as part of their tax reform proposal. This is the mandate that requires Americans purchase health insurance or face a tax of $695 per adult and $347.50 per child, or 2.5% of their adjusted gross income.

When the ACA (Obamacare) was passed into law, it came with promises from proponents that it would not raise taxes on middle-class American families.

Data from the Internal Revenue Service contradicts that claim, however, showing that in a majority of states in the nation 80% or more of families facing the tax are middle or lower income families earning $50,000 per year or less.

The next income cohort reported by the IRS also is taking a big hit, with middle-class families earning between $50,000 and $75,000 making up between 10% and 15% of families facing Obamacare’s individual mandate tax in most states. Overall, most states show middle-class families making up about 90% of families overall that are facing the Obamacare tax.

Maine Examiner has broken out the 2015 data for each state below, so you can see how the individual mandate tax is impacting middle-class families in your state.
