Pine Tree Primer: What is tax exempt property costing your Maine town?

 

In his final State of the State address, Governor Paul LePage promised to deliver data to state lawmakers showing just how much local property taxes

in their regions were affected by the dramatic increase in property being moved into conservation and other property tax exempt status.

In the speech, Governor LePage highlighted that Maine has exempted roughly the land mass of the state of Connecticut from property taxes, pushing the burden for paying for local services increasingly on to local homeowners.

Today, Governor Lepage released the list he promised lawmakers.

Some of the hardest hit communities across the state are those you might expect, college towns such as Orono, coastal regions such as Bar Harbor or areas with redeveloped government property, like Brunswick.

But other communities also show eye-popping impacts. For instance, the property tax shift on a median value home in Chelsea is almost $1,900 per year, in Eastport it is over $1,100 per year, and Lewiston homeowners see almost $1,000 per year in increased property taxes due to the shift.

The impact on municipal revenue is also spelled out, with the state’s data showing the city of Bangor would gain $8.3 million in revenue if assessing tax exempt property at 50% of the full rate, Brunswick would gain more than $5 million, Augusta more than $4.3 million, and so on.

In total, Governor LePage says the data shows a property tax shift of more than $330 million.
