CLINTON, MAINE – The Clinton Police Department wants to make it very clear to residents of their community. They are not the mask police and they do not want people calling them about it.
The statement comes in response to Governor Janet Mills’ latest order that the people of Maine are required to wear face masks in public settings where social distancing is “difficult” beginning on May 1.
“Good evening. Here we go again with another rule. Let me be very CLEAR, Clinton Police Department is NOT the mask police! Masks are required IF proper separation isn’t possible. You are exempt if you have any medical problem that is aggravated by wearing a mask,” says a Facebook post from the Clinton Maine Police Department official page.
Governor Mills has faced similar defiance through the time period in which she has imposed heavy restrictions on individuals and businesses across the state.
The Clinton Police Department also says businesses can require you to wear a mask at their place of business but you still have a right to medical privacy, “Businesses can require you to wear a mask, but they cannot ask you anything about your medical problem and you do not have to show any proof of your conditions!
To be clear, the Clinton PD does not want their residents to call and try to report individuals not wearing face masks, and they reiterated that point again later in their post.
“Just in case you misunderstood what I am saying I want to be very clear we are NOT the mask police, do not call anyone to report an unmasked person unless they have committed a crime and then I would think they might be wearing a mask and running!”
“Thank you for your understanding if you need anything except the above, please give us a call.”
In the comments section of the Facebook post, one Facebook user asked the Clinton PD, “Will you make an exception to not being the mask police if we report Janet Mills for not wearing a mask?”
That question drew a response from the Clinton Police Department account, who wrote, “Call her on her newly released cello fone number.”
The comment was in response to the release of Mills’ cell phone number live on Fox News the night before by Sunday River Brewing Company Owner Rick Savage.
