NEW YORK – With former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg climbing in the Democratic Party’s Presidential primary polls, there is a good chance that gun rights groups and defenders of the Second Amendment will ramp up criticism of Bloomberg, who famously funds the nation’s most well-known anti-gun group.
Bloomberg has now begun increasing in his presence in “Super Tuesday” primary states, such as Maine, reportedly opening his third office in Maine weeks ahead of the March 3rd vote. For weeks, Bloomberg’s multi-million dollar ad buys have saturated television stations and online video platforms such as YouTube.
There are memes now being distributed across social media that claim Bloomberg once said, “If you want to have a gun in your home, I think you’re pretty stupid.”
Nobody wants to get caught sharing a meme that is untrue, so Maine Examiner decided to fact check this meme. With Bloomberg’s history of funding anti-gun groups and campaigns, it seemed possible. But would Bloomberg have been so brazen as to openly insult tens of millions of American gun owners, including hundreds of thousands of Mainers, who enjoy some of the strongest gun rights protections in the nation?
In a July 8th
2014 interview with Rolling Stone’s Simon Vozick-Levenson, Bloomberg made the
statement that spawned the meme.
compared gun ownership to smoking and said, “And if you want to have a gun
in your house, I think you’re pretty stupid – particularly if you have kids
– but I guess you have a right to do that. Someday, there is going to be a suit
against parents who smoke in their houses or have guns in their houses by a
kid. It’s not that far-fetched.”
While the meme may not include the whole context of what Bloomberg said in the quote, Michael Bloomberg did in fact say that if you want to have a gun in your house, he thinks you’re pretty stupid.
of the interview included Bloomberg defending his stop-and-frisk policy as
Mayor of New York City after a federal judge ruled it violated the
Constitutional rights of black and Latino New Yorkers and a host of other
anti-gun actions and beliefs Bloomberg held.
FACT CHECK RESULT: TRUE – Bloomberg did say what he is quoted saying in the meme.
